Convoy BD-5 (White Sea - Dikson No. 5) - Soviet Arctic convoy during the Great Patriotic War. It was sunk on August 12-13, 1944, a few miles from the island. White in the Kara Sea by the German submarine U-365. The tragedy claimed the lives of 376 Soviet military personnel and logistics workers from among the 740 participants in the convoy. Children and most women died. The fate of 3 people is unknown. These events are the most massive loss of life among all types of convoys in the history of the Great Patriotic War in the Arctic. 71 (69) people were rescued by aviation forces, one of them died on board the plane. When rescuing people found at sea and in boats, the aircraft crews showed courage, bravery and dedication.
