Nikolai Karpovich Chechetko was born on November 15th, 1916 in the village of Starokorsunskaya (currently in the Karasunsky intra-urban district of Krasnodar) in the family of a Cossack. In 1937, Nikolai left for Gorky region and entered the Bogorodsky college of Leather Technology. In the august of 1941 Nikolay was called up to the ranks of the Red Army. In 1942 he graduated from Kamyshinsky Tank school and served in the standing army from September of the same year. In the part of his unit he took part in the military actions on the Stalingrad, Central and the 2nd Ukrainian Fronts.

During offensive battles for the Uman city (Cherkasy region), in the period from March 5 to March 13, 1944, Chechetko’s tank company as a part of the brigade made a raid on the deep behind enemy lines, inflicting great damage to manpower and military equipment. In the area of the village of Mankovka his crew joined the battle with two “Tiger” type tanks: having managed to set fire to both tanks, Nikolay captured the crossing. On March 11,1944 during the battle for the Ternovka village, he broke into the village for combat reconnaissance and was fighting against superior enemy forces, destroying the «Panther» tank. Being wounded, he left the battlefield only on the orders of the commander.

By decree of the Presidium of the USSR Supreme Soviet dated September 13, 1944, Chechetko Nikolay Karpovich was awarded the title of the Hero of the Sovet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the «Gold Star» medal for courage, bravery and heroism shown in the fight against the Nazi invaders.

In 1948 Nikolay graduated from Military academy of Armored and Mechanized Troops of the Red Army. Since august 1948 he taught tactics at the Kiev Tank School named after Marshal of the Soviet Union S. K. Timoshenko.

Lieutenant Colonel Chechetko is in reserve since 1952. In the same year, on July 23, Nikolay Karpovich passed away.
