«AEROSANI (snowmobile) is a sled that moves on snow and ice with the power of a propeller.» There was an urgent need for any equipment, including snowmobiles, which could move in winter off-road conditions, frost and snowstorms during the Great Patriotic War in the USSR. Accordingly, there also was the need for driver mechanics and snowmobile commanders. By September 15, 1941, according to the GKO decree No. GKO_516ss dated 08/19/1941, a separate aerosled school was formed in Koryazhma (Arkhangelsk region) to train l / s: 1000 driver mechanics, 740 commanders of combat aerosleds, 260 commanders parts. The commander of the school was Major General of Tank Forces Alexander Georgievich Polikarpov. Classes at the school began on September 20, 1941, and lasted until the spring of 1944. Not a day went by that the vehicles, announcing the surrounding area with the noise of working engines, did not arrange trips towards Yarensk, Solvychegodsk, Kotlas ... Three months _ the entire course of training on an accelerated (war!) Program: tactics of tank troops, weapons arrangement, material part of the machines. And then the aerosled battalions from Koryazhma were sent to the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. Airborne warriors distinguished themselves in battles on the Karelian, Volkhov, Donskoy, First Belorussian fronts, in operations on Lake Onega, liberated Novgorod and Rogachev, and took part in the Battle of Stalingrad.
