The military history of Anapa goes back to the distant past - to the time when a Turkish fortress was located on the site of the current resort. It was she who became the most important strategic, political and strong point, which turned into a real stumbling block between the two powers - the struggle between Russia and the Ottoman Empire. 5 times over the course of more than 40 years, Russian troops went to storm the fortress, more than 12 thousand soldiers died under its walls. And only on the 6th time the fortress finally submitted to the Russians.

In 1942, Anapa was occupied by the Nazi invaders, and for a whole year the city experienced all the horrors of captivity. During the days of occupation, partisan detachments operated in the forests near the village of Gostagaevskaya and the village of Sukko. Red Army soldiers and Black Sea sailors performed feats on Anapa soil. The legendary captain, Hero of the Soviet Union Dmitry Kalinin, whom his enemies buried with full military honors, and Hero of the Soviet Union Suren Arakelyan, who repeated the feat of Alexander Matrosov, performed his immortal feat on Anapa soil. Soviet troops liberated the resort on September 21, 1943, while fierce battles for the city took place at sea, on land and in the sky.
